Right to refuse dangerous work

A right to refuse was exercised recently and the procedure as defined in the Labour Code was not followed by IFS.

Your union has filed a complaint to Transport Canada. We are in communication with TC inspectors to ensure that the Labour Code is respected and that our members’ rights are not violated. Our members were entitled to exercise their right to refuse.

The Component fully supports all CAs who were directly involved in this right to refuse

In occupational health and safety, a right to refuse is one of the fundamental rights of our members under Part II of the Canada Labour Code.

The health and safety of our members is an issue on which we will never compromise.

We would like to thank members of the HS Committee who participated in the investigation for their dedication and support of this crew.

News from your Hotels & Transportation Committee

CDG

We are pleased to announce a new location for our hotel in Paris as of April 1, 2023. The crew hotel will be Le Méridien étoile. Your committee has been working hard for this change since the relocations last summer. The benefits of this new hotel are multiple: 27 minutes by transport from CDG, renovated and modern rooms, functional air conditioning and heating. Rooftop terrace for a view of Paris, close to many services, metro, grocery stores, stores, restaurants and parks. We hope you will enjoy this change.

The contract with Le Méridien will go beyond the period of the Olympics in Paris, for a period of 6 weeks during the summer of 2024. Your union as well as the pilot’s union have reached an agreement stating that during the l’Olympics, the crews will be staying at the resid’home CDG. Breakfast will be included as well as a return train ticket per 24 hours. It was imperative for us to find a solution considering the number of complaints on the Paris hotel. In return, the hotel could not accommodate us during the Olympic period.

LGW

A visit is taking place this week. We have expanded the area in order to visit quality hotels closer to London. More details will follow after the visit.

BCN

As published in our last communication, we need to find a new hotel in Barcelona. Visits are taking place as we speak. Just like for London, more details will be given in the next few weeks.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Keep filling out crewcare reports, these are very useful to us when we review the files.

If you have a non-compliant transport, for example a mini-van instead of a bus, this may be an occupational health and safety issue. In addition to completing a crewcare, please fill out a Coruson HS report! This way, your HS committee will be able to work in conjunction with the hotel committee and correct the situation more efficiently.

Sincerely,

Your Hotels & Transportation Committee team

National Day of Action to End Unpaid Work in the airline sector on April 25, 2023

National Day of Action to End Unpaid Work

Earlier this year many of the Airline Division Flight Attendants filled out a CUPE survey telling us how concerned they are about the rampant and unjust use of unpaid work in the airline sector. Whether it’s a lack of pay for boarding, deplaning, or pre-flight duties, it’s time to fight back to ensure that when flight attendants are at work, in uniform, performing their work duties – they’re being paid.

CUPE’s Airline Division, on behalf of our 18,500 flight attendant members, is organizing a National Day of Action to End Unpaid Work in the airline sector on April 25, 2023.

RSVP and let us know if you want to get more involved here.

This will be the start to a movement to be heard, to demonstrate to the public and our employers we need action on this.

The public hears us, when you talk to them during boarding, or when you’re assisting with seat assignments, checking emergency equipment, walking them to their gate as you go to yours, or assisting with special requests before boarding, and prepping your galleys they are amazed this is done with no compensation.

Together, we can work to put stop to this unfair practice and ensure everyone gets paid for time they are required to be at work. Please sign up if you will be off and willing to assist in the day of action, sign up to stay up to date with this campaign.

In solidarity,

Wesley Lesosky President, CUPE Airline Division

News from your H&S and Service Committees – service flows

Recently, the H&S and service committee Chairs conducted test flights for service flows for the south x4 on the 321LR, at the company’s request.

We believe that the only real solution is to add  5th FA would TS maintain the actual level of service, but agreed to test new service flows in hopes of improving the current service and mitigate the frustration felt by both pax and FAs.

We tried two proposals by the company. One didn’t work at all, and the other involved having R3 act as a ‘toggle’ position between both double trolleys. (Remember the A310 days). This didn’t really improve the situation for R1 much, and added extra work/stress on the R3 position.

In trying to alleviate R3 working in a toggle position, the new service flow just published by TS in effect solves one problem but creates another. The Flight director will now work simultaneously in economy on the bar trolley with R1, while also attending to the needs of Club and finishing the Club service. This has now added an additional workload to the flight director position.

We did not actually test this service plan in flight-it was suggested to both your H&S and Service committees in the debriefing following the test flights. We highlighted the following reasons why we were not in agreement with this service:

– we cannot be more than a few rows away from trolley

-trolley cannot be left unattended

-cannot move a double bar trolley on own

-safety concerns during turbulence

-L1 increased workload

-bar trolley is left unsecured in FWD galley until BOB gets to row 10, while R1/L1 continue Club service, which can take awhile due to many O* and other sales

We were therefore surprised by the announcement of this new service flow without any notice.

With this new service, please be reminded that while we are sometimes momentarily on a double bar trolley alone (ie: when one FA refills coffee pots/water jugs), at no time should a crew member be moving a double bar trolley by themselves.

We remind you of the importance of filling out safety reports via Coruson for any hazards, safety issues, or fatigue experienced while adhering to these changes.

Please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and concerns to both of your committees. We ask that you copy both committees on your email as we are working closely together to ensure a proper service standard.

Service at 4 A321 neo LR

Update on A321 neo LR service at 4 CA.

The union is standing by its position that the LOU signed in January 2021 must be respected!

This LOU was grieved and has been sent to arbitration. In the meantime, we know that the “status quo” is problematic and is causing heated conversation on many flights. Keep sending us your comments thru the “service” google form available https://atcomponent.com/en/contact-us/.

The more data we have in preparation for the arbitration the better it is!

Your HS committee would like to remind you that at no time are we to move a double bar trolley alone!

Hazard prevention is important so please follow service flow as per standards to prevent any kind of injuries!

What is your union doing while waiting for the arbitration case to be heard?

The chairs of your service committee as well as your HS committee, have been involved on different test flights to look at solutions that could reduce the inequity in the workload. Several service changes have been tested since last November, but the results of those tests have not been conclusive.

Your union with the involvement of your service and HS committees have been having open discussion with the company but with limited results so far.

As long as TS expectations and advertisement to our customers will be personalized service in Club, this means to us that we must have dedicated flight attendant, therefore a 5th CA as per the agreement signed between the parties!

Let’s be united, please follow your service flow and work safe!

News from your Division 9 Committee

Here is the most recent update from your Division 9 committee.

We know and understand that for many of you, the wait is unbearable. It has been 30 days since the announcement of the base closure and the entire committee has been working hard from day one. The committee has been following the procedure dictated by the labor code under Division 9, as we are Federal employees. The objectives of the committee are the following:

• Relocation assistance

• Severance amount

• Early retirement packages

• Helping commuters by allowing flexibility to ease the transition

• Getting agreements with other carriers

• Job reassignment and training within the organization

• Job search/career counselling support and financial advice

On some aspects, we have been able to make progress, but we believe that there is still room for improvements. We know that from the outside, the wait is long. Questions are being raised on a daily basis about the outcome of the work being done by this committee. Questions about when are you going to know what you are entitled to and many more.

It is important to us to let you know that your local team, as well as the Component Executive and CUPE are all working with the objective of getting the best conditions for all YVR members.

Since the beginning of the process, we held more than 6 meetings either with the company or as a working group. We reviewed several arbitration cases ( Cathay Pacific and WS) and have been reviewing other airlines collective agreements to get the best tools and arguments for the work of the committee. We are now in the final stages of the Committee work. We have CUPE legal supporting us to make sure we are covering each and every angle.

If you have questions and concerns, the entire team is there to help you. We understand that time is of importance and that major decisions are to be made. We know you need answers to make those decisions and we are committed to get those to you as soon as possible.
