Resignation from the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Air Transat Component

Rosemère, January 20, 2024

Resignation from the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Air Transat Component

Dear members,

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in me by voting for me again in the last elections. It is therefore with regret that I write this letter to inform you of my resignation, effective January 23, 2023, from my position as Treasurer of the Component.

This decision has not been taken lightly, and is the result of a thorough assessment of the situation. Unfortunately, the current working climate has become increasingly difficult to bear. The challenges I face on a daily basis and the toxic climate of harassment and discrimination within the component executive had a significant impact on my decision.

I have completed my three-year term and am very pleased with my accomplishments. It’s been a challenging three years of crisis management. I represented you proudly, honestly and ethically. I can confirm that our finances are in good shape. I would have liked to achieve a breakthrough and have the unpaid work with Dominic Levasseur recognized, but that will be in another way.

The work environment I’ve been exposed to for the past two years has been extremely toxic. Internal conflicts have taken their toll on my ideals and objectives at the Component. These actions have caused delays and pitfalls in our negotiation preparations. I’ll be frank: I’m not comfortable with the postponement of the start date for the vote on the 2nd agreement in principle. This postponement weighed heavily in my decision to resign today.

I sincerely thank you for the confidence you have placed in me throughout my mandate. I would also like to thank Dominic Levasseur for his support and incredible work as President of the Component. He has been an exceptional help throughout this mandate.

After several months working on negotiating the collective agreement, I’m happy to see you back on the line!

In solidarity,

Martin Rondeau

Important message

January 8th 2024

We feel it is essential to address recent social media commentaries which we were made aware of during the critical and final phase of bargaining.

It is imperative that we remind you of the importance of the values in the Equality Statement which governs our union and all of our members.

The core values highlight the importance of respectful and unifying behaviours which apply to not only how we conduct ourselves in person at meetings, but also to our communication online.

We strongly encourage you to read the Equality Statement by clicking here.

“Sometimes discrimination takes the form of harassment. Harassment means using real or perceived power to abuse, devalue or humiliate. Harassment should not be treated as a joke. The uneasiness and resentment that it creates are not feelings that help us grow as a union”.

Every member, elected or not, must abide by it, and any deviation from it will not be tolerated. Respect and cooperation are part of the foundation of our union, and each and every one of us has a role to play in keeping these two values at the forefront.

We are aware that elections for the positions of Component President and Component Treasurer will soon be underway. All the officers at the negotiating table have worked tirelessly together over the last few months, leaving the politics aside.

The bargaining committee, plays a crucial role in representing our collective interests, operates on principles of equality, collaboration, and consensus.

Our focus was fully on the negotiations and the task at hand. The negotiation process isn’t easy, but our goal around the table is the same: to obtain a new contract that lives up to our expectations and that will collectively improve our lives.

Around this table, we must stand united and present a united front to the employer. The decisions which were made here and communicated to you were made collectively.

We know that the election raises questions, but we ask you not to lose focus and to move forward respectfully and positively in the days to come.

This e-mail is a general reminder to all our members: lack of respect and civility, mean-spirited innuendo, and disparagement between members, including against your union officers will not be tolerated.

In a democratic process we encourage open dialogue and healthy debate as differences of opinion are necessary to keep us moving forward; however, they must take place and be communicated in a civilized and courteous manner.

In solidarity,

Dominic, Sheena, Martin, Jill and Marie-Hélène

Bargaining update, tentative agreement turned down

January 2nd 2024

Your bargaining committee has taken note of the membership’s clear decision to turn down the tentative agreement at  98.1% presented in December 2023. During all five special meetings held before the holidays, you were present in large numbers and clearly expressed your priorities.

Your committee heard you and is determined to continue its efforts and work on your behalf to reach a satisfactory agreement for our members.

The next few days will be crucial. Your committee will return to the bargaining table tomorrow morning, January 3rd.  These meetings will take place at the federal mediation and conciliation office.

More than ever, it is essential that members remain united and, above all, committed to the bargaining process.

As a reminder: Our strike mandate is still valid until January 23, 2024. We return to the bargaining table with strength and confidence, with the aim of reducing financial insecurity without further delay.

In solidarity

Your bargaining committee

Dominic, Sheena, Martin, jill and Marie-Hélène

Joint Venture TS-PORTER

Tuesday November 28th

Your component is concerned with today’s news of  the joint venture between TS and Porter Airlines.

While we are receptive to initiatives that could grow our employer’s business and improve its performance, it is essential more than ever that our collective agreement include provisions to protect our membership’s level of employement.

The various code-sharing, interline agreements and now joint venture agreements must not come at the cost of our jobs.

Rest assured that we will be monitoring any developments and seeking a commitment from the employer to ensure that these agreements have no impact on our members employment.

Job protection is key for your union and its members.

Your component executive

All united, a historic result of 99.8%

November 27th 2023

It is with strength and determination that you have mandated your bargaining committee the strongest strike mandate in the history of our union!

The time has come to have confidence in each other! For many years, we have, on many occasions, been present when Transat asked us to “help” in exchange for growth.

Too often, we’ve accepted reductions in our working conditions while our corporate executives continue to get richer.

You made it clear, the time has come to get what is due to us!

More than ever, we are experiencing financial insecurity unparalleled in the last 36 years!

Your message is clear: you want a collective agreement without further delay that gives you respect!
